Thoughts on an ever-evolving life

Highs and Lows

Blog Post-2-10-2016-Highs and Lows

We all have them, the Highest of Highs and the Lowest of Lows, during this journey we call life.  I have recently experienced both.

My low came today.  My Grandmother died.  She was 94 and one hell of a lady.  She was married to my grandfather for 74 years.  They had 5 children.  The oldest died at age 6 when he fell down a hill and through the ice of the river below. The surviving 4 children, including my mother, gave her 10 Grandchildren that resulted in 11 Great-Grandchildren.  She could be so loving and one look from her eyes could strike fear into your soul.  She never learned to swim but made the BEST Peanut butter Fudge in the entire world.

As my mother and her siblings held vigil at her bedside last night, my mother got a good hard belly laugh.  They were discussing the arrangements they would make after she passed and how they wanted to handle the funeral and reception.  One of my uncles turned to my mother and commented that he had heard I was writing and maybe I would be interested in writing her obituary.  My mother couldn’t help but laugh because they don’t know WHAT I write about.  Mom told me the story this morning and asked me to write the obituary, but please don’t make Grandma sound like a wanton whore.  🙂

I will spend this weekend with my extended family, remembering all the good, bad, funny and tragic stories that make up the life of my Grandmother.  Gone, but NEVER forgotten.  I Love You Grandma.

My High came over the weekend.  I took a group of High schoolers to a District Drama Competition three hours away.   We left on Friday so we could take them to a play Friday night.  On Saturday morning, we went to the competition.  After an exhaustingly long day, it came time for awards.  I am BEYOND Proud to tell you that my daughter WON the largest category at the competition.  She competed in the Dramatic Monologue- Experienced Category.  There were over 150 contestants in that category alone.  She will now be going to compete at the State Drama Competition.  She is the youngest participant in the school’s history to make it to State.  She’s a sophomore.  She also wrote a one act play.  She didn’t win that category, but will be able to showcase her play at the State Competition at one of the minor theaters.  I can’t describe the pride and joy I have for my MAGNIFICENT Girl.

Our lives are VERY, VERY short.  Bask in the light and love that comes your way, even when the skies are dark and the rain is falling.  I promise to be back with some juicier writing very soon.  🙂

“Bask in the light and love that comes your way, even when the skies are dark and the rain is falling.” You are an amazing woman Miss Amelia. This is advice all of us who forget just how short our lives really are should heed, and heed well. We also must remember that every storm runs out of rain. When it does, you and I shall stand in the sunshine together.

  9. This is so touching. I lost my grandmother this last year and she was 95. Such a woman…there is no way to fully recognize and pay enough respect to those Special luminaries in our lives. I am very sorry for your loss. Thrilled, however, about your daughter’s recognition!! What validation she and you must feel!!

  13. Both are something to celebrate, the long life of a wonderful woman and now the successful beginnings of another woman’s journey and you held in esteem by your family sounds like a third strong woman. Biggest hugs, I don’t really know you, but I’d be proud of you if I did, I am. X

  14. So excited to hear how well your daughter did in that event! Don’t forget that you promised a pic of the Tinkerbell costume too.

So the wanton whore details are to be omitted? Tsk. Sounds like your grandma live a life worth telling about. That she made such an impression on so many is a testament to her character. Sending you all the warmest thoughts as you tone done that grand lady’s story and hoping as you walk through the memory halls, there are many smiles to temper the tears.

Sorry for your loss, Grandmother gave the world many years of experience in living so long and so full. Congrats on Daughter’s success. Be proud, be loud. And keep writing. The world is a better place as long as writers share UPS and downs with others. TY 💞
