Haiku Champion

Blog Post-5-5-2016-Haiku Champion

The pedestal falls

Leave me to my hard work friends

I build myself again

**This was unanimously chosen as the winner of a Haiku Competition in the Open Category.  Unfortunately, there were six syllables in the last sentence, so they didn’t feel they could award it first place, but decided to name it second place as a padded consolation.  It was also written by my 15 year old daughter.  I am one VERY PROUD Mother.  🙂

  2. Well I know where she gets her poetic talents from. 😘

  3. Jack Kerouac felt that strictly adhering to the syllable counts was a mistake, in English, for (I think) somewhat technical reasons. As I recall there are details of Japanese that make it less forced in that language, whereas English tends to come out rather stilted and un-English sounding.

He wrote *astounding* “America Haiku”, I happen to think it’s his best work. But I’m weird.

    • You are not weird at all. I appreciate the insight and thoughts that you provided. I completely understand your concept, but this particular contest had very clearly defined guidelines so they didn’t really have a choice. Although, I guess that’s not completely true because they gave her second place. Truly, it doesn’t matter, I am just so proud of her for entering no matter where she finished. The fact that she can put her thoughts and feelings down on paper and share them is incredible. Again, I’m VERY PROUD. 🙂

    • Thanks Sweets! I am in awe of her self confidence and kind heart. The school will be having auditions for the Fall Musical very soon. Two mean girls came up to her and informed her that THEY would be getting the lead rolls, but they were sure she could find something minor that would suit her. She just smiled and wished them luck at auditions. Since then, she has been working her ass off to make sure she gets the part over them. THAT’S MY GIRL!! 🙂

  6. Your daughter has talent. If she would have written it without the I in the last line she would have qualified. Congrats.

    • Thank you Chimp! I think she is AMAZING, but I might just be a little bias. 🙂
She has rewritten it a dozen different ways to make the five syllables, but one of the things I love the most about her is her acceptance of herself. She says that she could have written it with 5, but she likes it just the way it is. Knowing the judges all chose hers as first makes that 2nd place certificate just fine by her. 🙂

That’s wonderful! Quick question – can you explain the kanji writing at the top? What does it say?

    • They are the Japanese symbols meaning Haiku Poetry. Thanks for the comment and the question. Always happy to see you stopping to say hello. 🙂
